Bringing Gait & Balance Assessment Out of the Lab

The Challenge

How a person walks reveals fall risk, recovery progress, and emerging neurological issues. But high-quality gait and balance assessment typically requires costly motion-capture labs, putting it out of reach for routine screening.

The Approach

We focused on extracting the most clinically meaningful features — stride timing, symmetry, cadence, and postural sway — from a minimal, low-cost sensor configuration.

  • A simple, quick-to-set-up sensor placement
  • On-device computation of interpretable metrics
  • One workflow spanning clinic screening and at-home tracking

Designed for Real Use

We co-designed the workflow with clinicians so the tool fit existing routines, produced clear output, and stayed resilient to messy, real-world conditions.

Outcome

A practical screening approach that brings meaningful gait and balance assessment closer to the people who need it — a first step toward affordable, preventive care.

Affordable measurement is the first step toward affordable prevention.
